Procedure to acquire a Visa
When the applicant is living in abroad and intends to come to Japan for a long term stay, you need to follow the procedure below:
(Although a permanent visa and a temporary visa are exception.)
Steps to obtain visa
1. The person who invites the applicant to Japan, such as a sponsor or spouse of the applicant etc. applies for the certificate of eligibility for resident status at the immigration office in Japan.

2. After the person acquires the certificate, send it to the applicant living in abroad.
↓
3. The applicant applies for a visa at the Japanese embassy by submitting the certificate of eligibility for resident status and other necessary documents designated by the embassy.
↓
4. A visa will be issued at the Japanese embassy (ref.1).
↓
5. When the applicant arrives at an airport in Japan (ref.2), present both your visa and the certificate of eligibility for resident status at the immigration counter, and acquire a resident status after the inspection.

6. You can enter Japan and stay legally until the expiry date of your resident status.
Ref.1: Acquisition of the certificate of eligibility for resident status does not guarantee your obtaining a visa at the Japanese embassy as there is a different inspection at the embassy.
Ref.2: The certificate of eligibility of resident status expires in 3 months. You need to apply for your visa and arrive in Japan before the expiration.
How to get "the Certificate of eligibility for resident status"
To apply Japanese visa at the Japanese embassy in your country, you need to acquire the Certificate of eligibility for resident status beforehand at the immigration office in Japan.
To acquire the Certificate of eligibility for resident status, the following things are necessary:
- 1. When you wish to obtain the certificate, you need to be invited to Japan by someone who is living in Japan, such as your spouse, family, or employer etc..
- 2. The certification is usually supposed to be applied for by someone who invites you to Japan, however it is also possible to apply for it by yourself in special cases.
- 3. The necessary documents and procedure varies depending on what kind of resident status (visa) you will acquire.

- ex.1 When the you are employed by a Japanese company and want to come to Japan for work at the company.
